Why Should Great Recruiters Have Soft Skills?

If you have not heard, what soft skills are, this is the time to hop on a moving train, as the trend is full on in 2019!

In one of our last articles, we already mention, what soft skills are in broad sense, but let’s take a closer look, as taking on these skills can take you from a good recruiter to a GREAT recruiter.

The deal is that soft skills can be the breaking point, whether a job seeker chooses to work for a company or not, if they have similar offers. If the company is using a strategic approach to recruitment, they probably have decided that it is important to build relationships with potential candidates — nurture them, keep in touch, communicate as they were friends not two sides of a job contract.

Job seekers have made it loud and clear that they want companies to show more interest in them, like they want those people to work for them. For a long time it has been a cold-shoulder treatment for candidates — no reply to an application, only 2nd-round candidates would be contacted, no feedback on anything. Like candidates did not matter, and they could wait for weeks unemployed on a company to make a call or send an e-mail — the slightest little action.

Not all companies are quick to change. Some mountains cannot be moved. And those which can, can use this opportunity to strike a move, and get those employees off the market! How? And you guessed it right — SOFT SKILLS!

Adaptability

In this fast-paced time, things change by the minute, and recruiters need to stay on top of things, even if they are not the same as in the beginning. As a recruiter, you need to learn to adapt and be patient with candidates. It could mean to be flexible with interview time, as sometimes best candidates are already employed, and you need to meet them, when they are available. This also goes for interview type — you should be able to work a way to schedule a Skype or Facetime meeting, if necessary.

Creativity

There are two opposite sides of a spectrum in the market — IT recruiters who could possibly make their way to top-secret contacts and then there are recruiters who have not changed their game since 2000. Some recruiters could be compared to the most devoted salesperson. If at a supermarket you receive a question about yourself, do not be surprised that it might have been a recruiter conducting a short interview. You never know.

The art of negotiation

To be able to negotiate with others, recruiter needs to acquire other soft skills beforehand, like body language, listening, reading people, attention to detail and critical thinking to use the information with purpose.

Emotional Intelligence (EQ)

This skill is rated very highly not only for recruiters, but for all positions. As recruitment is a sociable matter, and to be able to go beyond logical and rational is of essence. Being an employee is not just about executing certain tasks, it is about a whole lot more, such as being apart of a community with a set of values and beliefs., it is about fulfilling person’s professional and personal goals and much more. And recruiters need to be able to find out all these underlying details.

And to practice soft skills takes time. A big part of recruitment actually is administrative tasks — writing job ads, posting to job boards and social media, sorting through incoming applications, saving to folders and moving them around, making notes on candidates, scheduling interviews and much more.
